Don’t Necessarily Trust; Verify

By | In my opinion, Opportunity | No Comments

Good Day,

It’s no secret that engaging in any collaboration — let alone making a financial investment — requires a certain level of trust. Yet committing to either can often become unnecessarily complex and time-consuming.

Past experiences can carry meaningful weight, but trust is not something that can be fully established in advance; it is emergent and grows or diminishes through real-time experiences.

It’s the reason investment returns almost always carry with them this disclaimer; past performance is not indicative of future results.

The future inherently carries uncertainty; however, advancements in today’s technologies can significantly reduce many of the obstacles & time the trust-building process used to take.

Family offices are known for taking things slow & being highly selective when it comes to the partners they choose to work with.

In the past, verifying someone’s trustworthiness beforehand often required extensive personal relationships, recommendations from trusted intermediaries, or direct, time-consuming investigations.

And in many respects, this still carries with it a lot of merit. But it’s no longer the only way.

What if truly verifying one’s trustworthiness & reliability meant engaging them sooner rather than later- what if real-time feedback loops were prioritized over vetting one with feelings & bias prior instead?

Today’s digital tools afford us the opportunity to not only expedite collaborating with one another, but to also get to understand each other more intimately while considerably mitigating the traditional risks of doing so.

Embrace curiosity, imagine new collaborations, and don’t necessarily trust, verify—trust will ensue. As the great Martin Luther King Jr. once said,

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”

For anyone curious, I’d love to further discuss my offering on exclusively collaborating with a family office.

Thanks for reading, and be well!
